Goulash is a traditional Hungarian dish, a hearty stew made with beef, vegetables, and spices, particularly paprika. It’s a comforting meal often served with bread or dumplings. Here’s a classic goulash recipe and how to prepare it:
Ingredients:
500 g beef (chuck or stew meat), cut into cubes
2 tbsp vegetable oil or lard
2 large onions, chopped
2-3 cloves garlic, minced
2 tbsp sweet Hungarian paprika
1 tsp caraway seeds (optional)
2 medium carrots, sliced
1 bell pepper, chopped
2 medium potatoes, diced
1 can (400 g) diced tomatoes (or 2 fresh tomatoes, chopped)
4 cups beef broth or water
Salt and pepper, to taste
Fresh parsley for garnish
Instructions:
Sear the Meat: In a large pot, heat the oil over medium-high heat. Add the beef cubes and brown them on all sides. Remove the beef and set it aside.
Cook the Onions: In the same pot, add the chopped onions and cook until they are soft and translucent.
Add Garlic and Spices: Stir in the minced garlic, paprika, and caraway seeds, cooking for another minute until fragrant.
Combine Ingredients: Return the beef to the pot. Add the carrots, bell pepper, diced tomatoes, and potatoes. Pour in the beef broth or water.
Simmer the Goulash: Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and simmer for about 1.5 to 2 hours, or until the meat is tender. Stir occasionally and add more liquid if necessary.
Season and Serve: Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve hot, garnished with fresh parsley, alongside bread or dumplings.
Enjoy your delicious Hungarian goulash!
